William Manchester was a hugely successful popular historian and biographer whose books include The Last Lion, Volumes 1 and 2, Goodbye Darkness, A World Lit Only by Fire, The Glory and the Dream, The Arms of Krupp, American Caesar, The Death of the President, and assorted works of journalism. Paul Reid is an award-winning journalist. In late 2003 his friend, William Manchester, in failing health, asked Paul to complete The Last Lion: Defender of the Realm. He lives in North Carolina.

Once again a great book by William Manchester. His language is great, and especially the exciting moments just before the begin of World War II are written in such a vivid language that you almost feel as if you're right with the people as the things happened. However, like in the first volume, two problems appear. Firstly, Manchester's love for German quotations is much, much greater than his command of that particular language. Some of the German "expressions" (which is, at least, what they were supposed to be) seem to be re-translated from English into German. For example, "Storm Trooper" is a not quite literal English translation for members of the SA or SS. Manchester re-translated it into an alleged German word "Sturmtrupper", which, however, never existed. And whenever the English word could be translated into more than one different German expressions (with different meanings) Manchester can almost be relied upon to go down the wrong aisle. The second problem is, also as in the first volume, that some of the maps are inaccurate. This art studio who did the maps never seems to be able to get the size and shape of East Prussia right, and a tomb of Bismarck NEVER existed on the square in front of the Reichstag. Bismarck was interred on his country estate at Friedrichsruh near Hamburg and is resting there to this day. But that's the problem when you use an art studio to make maps instead of a cartographer - the former doesn't necessarily get the maps right.While these errors can be annoying it is, of course, still a joy to read that book as the mistakes, despite their numbers, only make up a diminuitive part of the book. Most of it is incredibly readable and very instructive.

A very good book about Winston Churchill's early and mid-life carreer. However, despite the wonderful prose it is written in I can't give it full points. Whenever William Manchester writes about Germany he gets a bit hazy and is not always up to the point, as he sometimes gets his German-language quotations, and, sometimes, facts about the German Kaiserreich wrong. And a majority of the maps in the book are inaccurate. The maps of World War I show Germany's post-Versailles western border and not the Kaiserreich's actual Western border as they were during World War I, while in one map the names of Alsace and Lorraine are inserted quite randomly. In another map, the eastern borders of Austria-Hungary and Germany are very inaccurate. I believe that in a work of history these things should have been done correctly.

The book is very engaging to read and the amount of pages really didn't overwhelm me. Of course, Manchester really likes Churchill - so much is clear after reading the first few hundred pages - but he still acknowledges the failures and missteps of the man, who arguably saved Europe.It was a great read and I can only recommend the book.

I read the first 2 volumes and was waiting very much the 3rd one. Now I know the story that it was not written by Manchester who died but Reid and it is in very similar style and very detailed and exciting to read.

Although the book was okay it was not as good as the first two parts, written by William Manchester. Paul Reid does not seem to have the same ability to write in a way that makes you not want to put the book down. Of course I read it and enjoyed it but something was missing.

"The Last Lion: Alone, 1932-1940," the second of William Manchester's projected three-volume biography of Winston Spencer Churchill, continues telling the story of the life of the 20th century's greatest statesman. This volume covers the eight-year period from the beginning of Churchill's longest period in the political "wilderness," to his rise to power as Prime Minister of Great Britain at the beginning of World War II. I think this book is even better than the first volume, "The Last Lion: Visions of Glory, 1874-1932." Manchester contends that the inter-war years, and not his years as Prime Minister, were Churchill's personal "finest hour." Politically ostracized by two successive Prime Ministers - Stanley Baldwin and Neville Chamberlain, the main architects of Britain's policy of appeasing Nazi Germany - Churchill was one of only a handful of men in Britain to speak out in favor of increased military preparedness as a means of countering the growing Nazi threat in Europe. Only when it became obvious in the late 1930s that the appeasement of Hitler had failed, did the British nation turn to the one man who had consistently advocated standing up to the Nazi dictator: Winston Spencer ChurchillAs he did in the first volume of Churchill's life, Manchester provides an insightful historical overview of the times in which Churchill lived. Especially fascinating to me was the account of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's 1938 trip to Munich, where the most infamous act of appeasing Hitler - the sellout of Czechoslovakia - took place, and where Chamberlain believed he had achieved "peace in our times.""The Last Lion: Alone, 1932-1940" once again clearly demonstrates why William Manchester is one of the pre-eminent biographers at work today. The book is written with obviously meticulous scholarship, insightful analysis, and crisp, sparkling prose; I have yet to find a better account of Churchill's life. Now, if only Mr. Manchester would give us that third volume . . .
